Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for an extended period when multiple of them floated into the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting six thousand travelers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Officials confirmed that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons sent during the weekend passed through the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the frontier with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
At least 11 balloons transporting numerous containers of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are not unusual in the Baltic region and Poland."
Since January, 544 balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been noted during the prior year.
Cross-Border Effects
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its border nation utilizing the meteorological equipment.
Criminal Methodology
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, officials clarified that "Atmospheric equipment are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that such operations become unprofitable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
Regional Security Context
The recent incidents occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.
Parallel situations in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout the region.
